Most people in America are unaware of exactly what GMO’s are and how they affect the plants they inhabit and our health. They have been used in this country for over a decade yet many have not heard of them. It is likely that this is exactly what the manufacturers desire.
I had been hearing about them but didn’t really understand how they were used. Now that I do, I try everything I can to avoid them. They are banned in many countries due to concerns over the health of the farming industry and potential ill-health effects.
Basically, most GMO’s are made by amplifying DNA from one organism, splicing it, and putting it into another organism. In the new organism, it will make a new protein that has an intended effect, say to kill bugs. Over 90% of the corn and soy in our country is indeed genetically modified.
In corn, these new proteins actually kill bugs through causing “holes” inside the gut. These holes kill the bugs.
The protein affects our guts too but doesn’t kill us, at least not quickly. These proteins are most certainly foreign to our bodies and immune systems. When our body sees something new it often can induce a reaction to attack the foreign offender/protein.
When shopping keep a lookout for GMO-free products and make sure your leaders in government know that you always want your food labeled in regards to GMO status. Companies are trying to lobby the government to make GMO products unidentifiable by the consumer. In Europe, all products must be labeled. And thank you to Whole Foods for labeling all their products!! Thanks for reading!
